The Grunwald tablet

Add to planner
„The Grunwald tablet” is placed on the outside of cathedral’s wall. It was unveiled in 1910 on the 500 year anniversary of Battle of Grunwald. It shows the celebratory arrival of king Władysław Jagiełło and queen Jadwiga with the chivalry to Przemyśl and greeting citizens with bishop Eryk Winsen and village head Michał in front. Before the king and queen there are squires holding scriptures with municipal rights given to the town by the king. The city is portrayed as a background to the scene. Around the tablet is an inscription: “To King Władysław Jagiełło, for giving the city its rights in 1389-1424 and for founding the cathedral 1412 - to queen Jadwiga for priviliges 1387 - on the 500 year anniversary of Battle of Grunwald - by the city of Przemyśl 1910.”

The tablet’s creator portrayed important city figures on the bas-relief. Bishop Józef Sebastian Pelczar replaced bishop Eryk, mayor Franciszek Doliński replaced village mayor Michał, dr Stefan Momidłowski and advocate dr Józef Scheinbach were situated in the place of city delegates and in the top right corner the president of Grunwald commemoration meetings dr Leonarda Tatnawski. The portrait of Kazimierz Osiński and the self-portrait of Jan Raszka can be found in the top left corner, replacing the knights. The engraving of Hohenberg from 1618 was used as a background panorama.
